Letter from the Soil

Dear human friend,
My name is Soil. Last night, the Water wrote a letter to you. I decided to let mine follow. Because Water is not alone on its race for purity, health and quality.
I would like to tell you a little bit about me, before I will then raise the same issues the Water did, talking about contamination and pollution. Maybe you know a lot about the Water. Nevertheless, I have this feeling, that my soil-being on Earth — my very importance — is somehow overlooked by you, dear human friend.
At first, I would like to introduce my inner team, my layers. There are four of them, and they have beautiful names, are referred to as “Horizons”. Horizon 0, A, B and C.
Horizon 0 is my top layer. The one on which you walk. It is only about one inch thick and it consists of deceased, organic material that nourishes me and keeps me healthy. It is very fertile, contains lots of humus and microorganisms in order to nurture plants. My second layer is called Horizon A. This is the layer, in which you find roots and beneficial microorganisms that feed on the waste materials shed off by roots. It is the home of beautiful critters like earthworms.
